To celebrate this new season, we focus on the quintessential autumnal tradition that is synonymous with the Northeast – apple picking. Our quick essential guide offers two earth-friendly options by rail and two alternatives by car. Happy harvesting!

BY TRAIN
Fishkill Farms
Fishkill farms is well known for the apple-picking aficionado. This giant 270-acre apple orchard is rich in their produce and history as it has been in the Morgenthau family for over 100 years. One is guaranteed high quality on these beautiful grounds. To enjoy their eco-certified bounty, apple picking is available through reservation only. There’s a convenient cider bar that is open Tuesday through Sunday 11 am – 6 pm with extended hours until 7 pm on Fridays.

Journey
From timeless Grand Central Terminal, take the Hudson Line towards Poughkeepsie. Exit at the Beacon Station and take your favorite car-sharing option 12 miles to the farm.

Wilkens Fruit & Fir Farm
Celebrating its 105th harvest, Wilkens Fruit and Fir Farm is another fall destination rich in history. In addition to apples, this site offers pumpkins and peaches – perfect for making sumptuous pies or muffins back at home. While you are there, peruse one of three farm markets where you can find freshly pressed apple cider to baked pies, and mouth-watering apple cider donuts.

Hop on a Metro North Hudson Line from Grand Central Terminal to Peekskill and take a 16-minute taxi to the farm.

Barton Orchards
Barton Orchards is the most well-rounded ground you can visit. A sprawling 175-acre apple orchard and vegetable farm will guarantee you have enough space for you and your group to enjoy the bountiful selection. In addition to the orchards, satisfy your sweet tooth by stopping at the ice cream stand, taking a break at the petting zoo and quench your thirst at the Tap Room which serves local craft beer, cider, and wine. There is something for everyone here – the car ride is worth every mile.

Alstede Farms
Located in nearby New Jersey, Alstede Farms is the perfect weekday getaway to take advantage of smaller crowds. Great for kids as the site has hayrides, a petting zoo, a maze, and delicious homemade ice cream and pie. The farm store is one of the best in the area as the variety will have you navigating the aisles several times over.
